Ratio and Proportion - Individual quantity increase.

Question The cost of an article (which is composed of raw material and wages) was 3 times the value the raw material used. The cost of raw material increased in ratio 3:7 and wages increased in the ratio 4:9. Find the present cost of article if original cost was Rs 18.

(a) Rs. 41
(b) Rs. 30
(c) Rs. 40
(d) Rs. 46

Solution
 Let the original cost of article be 450 (which gives raw material 150 and wages 300)
 Now Increased raw material will be
 => increased raw material = (7/3)*150 = 350
 Now Increased wage will be
 => increased wage = (9/4)*300 = 675
Increased cost = 675 + 350 = 1025
So increase is from 450 to 1025 increase from 18 can be found out by :-
=>(450*18)/1025 =>Rs 41

 Correct option is (a)

  1. Why should you assume the original cost of the article?!

    Original cost of article = Rs.18..................(GIVEN)
    => Raw material cost = 1/3 * 18 = Rs.6
    => Wages = 18 - 6 or 2/3 * 18 = Rs.12

    New Raw material cost = 7/3 * 6 = Rs.14
    New Wage = 9/4 * 12 = Rs. 27

    New cost of article = 14 + 27 = Rs.41
